History - 20 Ideas That Created Our Civilization: Session 1
The Society of the Four Arts
From ancient times to the 21st century, certain inventions have changed the world, enabling humans to produce more food and establish social order and cultural meaning. You’ll learn how inventions are not only a product of engineering know-how but a result of social and cultural conditions as well. The course begins with those innovations that are basic to our world, including the invention of the wheel, writing, and money.
Session I includes the discovery and use of metals, the chariot, and geometry. On the plane of ideas, the course will explore legal codes as they evolved toward the modern mind – among these will be the Code of Hammurabi, the Egyptian codes, and Roman Law.
