A Rich History of Iranian Art with Moya Carey

Monday, February 12, 2018 @ 11:00am
The Society of the Four Arts

Presented in partnership with the American Friends of the Victoria and Albert Museum The Victoria and Albert Museum is home to one of the most exceptional and extensive collections of Iranian art in the world. Join V&A curator Moya Carey as she explores the Victorian fascination with “Persia” and examines how the V&A built up such collections – including important examples of lustre tilework and carpets such as the Ardabil Carpet, purchased in 1893. Dr. Moya Carey is the Iran Heritage Foundation Curator for the Iranian Collections at the V&A. She has a PhD in Islamic art history, from the School of Oriental and African Studies (University of London), awarded in 2001. She joined the V&A in 2009. Her research interests cover Persian manuscript-painting and drawing, inlaid metalwork, scientific mapping traditions, visual culture of Qajar Iran, and the long design history of the Persian carpet. She also worked on the re-display of Safavid ceramics for the V&A’s Ceramics Study Galleries, and the Middle Eastern displays in the Glass Gallery. She has recently completed a book on the V&A’s Iranian collections, and the acquisition stories behind them: “Persian Art. Collecting the Arts of Iran in the 19th Century” (V&A, 2018).
