Annual Speaker The Duchess of Rutland presents “Belvoir Castle and Capability Brown: Discovering a Lost Landscape”

Wednesday, February 28, 2018 @ 10:00am
The Society of the Four Arts

The Garden Club of Palm Beach Belvoir Castle is the most fabulous fairy-tale castle in England. It has been in the same family for over a thousand years, and from its high hill it broods over immense tracts of Leicestershire and Lincolnshire. It is one of England’s great treasure houses and its chatelaine for the new millennium is Emma Manners, 11th Duchess of Rutland. Since taking charge of the estate she has shaken off the dust sheets and brought life back to a castle that had slept since World War II. Chief amongst her innumerable projects has been the restoration of the landscape, triggered by her recent discovery of the plans of England’s greatest landscape architect, Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown, drawn up in 1780 but shelved and long forgotten. Manners lost no time in ensuring Brown’s vision for Belvoir would at last be fulfilled. Her commitment to realize one of the most radical designs of Brown’s career has resulted in a landscape that is now regarded as a great masterpiece. Manners planned this project to celebrate the tercentenary of Brown’s birth. In 2016 Belvoir opened the restored areas of the estate to the public – never seen before were stunning views and vistas that Capability had planned for Belvoir over 250 years ago. Also in 2016, her work was commemorated in a three-part television documentary for Britain’s Channel 4 “Alan Titchmarsh on Capability Brown,” and in her book, “Capability Brown & Belvoir – Discovering a Lost Landscape.”
