A Conversation with Alexander W. Dreyfoos
The Society of the Four Arts
Join Four Arts president Dr. David Breneman for an informal interview with Alexander W. Dreyfoos, local visionary, inventor, entrepreneur, and philanthropist.
Dreyfoos is rare in his generation for successfully merging the arts and sciences in his life. He first combined photography with electronics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He received his MBA at Harvard Business School. In 1963 Dreyfoos formed Photo Electronics Corporation with George W. Mergens to manufacture electronic photography equipment, and moved to Palm Beach County in 1968. One of their many patents led to an invention on exhibit at the Smithsonian Institution; another earned them an Academy Award.
Dreyfoos is credited as founder of the Palm Beach County Cultural Council, and as the man behind the efforts that resulted in the Raymond F. Kravis Center for the Performing Arts opening debt-free in 1992. Then he led it through fifteen profitable seasons.
Dreyfoos actively serves MIT, where the Alexander W. Dreyfoos Building was dedicated in 2004. In Florida, he made history with the largest private contribution to a public school to support Palm Beach County’s arts magnet high school, subsequently renamed the Alexander W. Dreyfoos, Jr. School of the Arts. A trustee of the Scripps Research Institute, Dreyfoos was instrumental in their choosing Jupiter to build a bio-medical research campus, where the lobby is named in honor of Renate and Alex Dreyfoos. He has been honored by many, including the Town of Palm Beach.
In 2010 Renate and Alex received the Boat International World Superyacht Voyager’s Award in conjunction with their 19-month odyssey aboard their Silver Cloud, believed to be the first substantial yacht using the innovative SWATH design to provide exceptional stability. The photographs he has created during these and other enthusiasms are highly regarded.
