    Fire Fest 2014

On October 18, from 1:00 – 9:00 p.m., the Friends of Jonathan Dickinson State Park are proudly presenting Fire Fest 2014: a fun-filled, Halloween-themed family event educating the community about prescribed fire in Florida. The event focuses on increasing awareness and appreciation of the park’s unique wildlife and plants, recreational opportunities, and rich natural history.

Prescribed fire helps maintain wildlife habitat and the many natural communities in the park. Fire Fest welcomes visitors to view prescribed burning up close and talk to trained fire crew. Two fire demonstrations take place throughout the event, including one with a helicopter bucket drop and one in the evening after sunset. Smokey Bear will be there to support the crew too!

And there’s much more to Fire Fest than the burn demos, with children’s art activities, scrub-jay walks, night hikes, fire truck demonstrations, marshmallow roasting, exhibitors, a spooky trail, and much more! Two new free events this year are Keep Flippin Gymnastics demonstrations, and the Bridge Road Writers’ Fright Write Scare and Share campfire from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. for ages 16 and up. The event costs $6 for park entry for up to 8 people per vehicle. Additional fees apply for special activities including hayrides at $2 per person and swamp buggy rides at $10 per person (3 and under are free); bounce house, slide, children’s obstacle course, and games are $6 for an all-day stamp ($3 for ages 3 and under); all other activities are free. Food and beverages, including beer, will be for sale throughout the event.

Fire Fest is sponsored by, and a portion of the proceeds benefit, the Friends of Jonathan Dickinson State Park, Inc., a community-based, non-profit organization that advocates for the historical, educational, and ecological enhancement of the park.
