1,000 Books Before Kindergarten Kickoff Party

    Rescheduled from October 7.

Boca Raton Public Library is proud to launch a new program to help children prepare for kindergarten. Parents, caregivers and families are invited to attend a kickoff event at the Downtown Library on October 7, 2016, from 3:30–4:30 p.m. to learn more about this initiative and register for the program.

“This is an exciting addition to the Early Literacy offerings at the BRPL. The program is designed to create the best start possible on lifelong reading and learning skills by building the habit of reading. In addition to providing start-up materials such as a reading log, there will be tools available on our website to help parents and caregivers teach young children,” notes Amanda Liebl, Youth Programs Director.

The year-round program is for newborns up to children entering kindergarten. Each milestone of 100 books read is celebrated by staff and children with a special sticker, and is noted on the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten community board display. Each May, children who have successfully read to the 1,000 book goal are invited to attend a “graduation” ceremony and party to receive a special certificate.

“With this initiative, the BRPL is helping to send children to school better prepared to be successful. Promoting the success of children is one of the most significant contributions the BRPL can make to our community,” says Ann Nappa, Manager of Library Services for the City of Boca Raton.

Public libraries are important educational partners with schools to help young children get ready to read and be prepared to attend kindergarten. Studies show that reading aloud to children helps strengthen language skills and build vocabulary -- two important tools when children begin learning to read in kindergarten.
