Illuminating the Deep: Explore. Learn. Act. (The Fine Art of Exploration)

    Opening reception: January 5, 2017  5:30 – 7:30 p.m. at the ArtCenter Gallery

Part I: Illuminating the Deep: Explore. Learn. Act. Showcases the collaborative genius of the internationally-recognized authority on bioluminescence, Dr. Edie Widder, and the artist, Steven Bernstein, PhD, combining art and science. Their vibrant photographic images of unimagined creatures, captured in the depths of the sea by Dr. Widder’s unique cameras, accompanied by informational panels, provide a colorful and engaging introduction to the language of light (and giant squid) in our oceans.

Part II: The Fine Art of Exploration, presents a private collection of original paintings depicting the never-before-seen wonders of the deep by Else Bostlemann. Bostlemann was the expedition artist for scientist William Beebe during the world-record Bathysphere dives into the deep sea in the 1930’s. Beebe and Bostlemann introduced the world to bioluminescence. This historic artwork, on loan to the Lighthouse ArtCenter from the Bostlemann family, was created for National Geographic, and have never been publicly displayed.

Part III: Google Tilt Brush While the first two parts of the exhibition establish bioluminescence as the underwater norm rather than the exception, the question remains: If light was your only language, what would you say? With a wave of a digital “brush,” guests can create wondrous 3-D “paintings” of light. This newly-released technology, the Tilt Brush and a VIVE virtual reality headset, allow visitors to immerse themselves in the experience. As they “paint,” their creations will be viewed by other visitors on the computer monitor and/or in large scale with digital projection.
