    Jupiter's Ancient Spanish Shipwreck

The Friends of Jonathan Dickinson State Park are pleased to host a presentation by Captain Peter Leo in which he recounts his fabulous 1987 discovery of a treasure filled Spanish shipwreck.

Unlike so many other shipwrecks hidden far from shore and deep beneath the waves, Captain Leo chanced upon the sunken ship while swimming at Jupiter Beach Park.  The vessel was lying in a mere ten feet of water and only 200 feet from the shoreline.

The wreck was soon identified as the San Miguel de Archangel, a Spanish ship that sailed in nearby waters around 1659. The discovery produced thousands of silver and gold coins as well as other marine artifacts.

Captain Leo will speak about his adventure and the history of this type of ship at a reception held in the Kimbell Education Center in the park at 6:00 p.m.  Light refreshments and beverages will be offered by the Friends of Jonathan Dickinson State Park.

This event is sponsored by the Friends of Jonathan Dickinson State Park, Inc., a community-based, non-profit organization that advocates for the historical, educational, and ecological enhancement of Jonathan Dickinson State Park.
