Outlaws, In-Laws, Lovers and Kings: Shakespeare’s Little Problem

Outlaws, In-Laws, Lovers and Kings: Shakespeare’s Little Problems with PBAU Professors Susan Jones, Ph.D. and Beate Rodewald, Ph.D.

What on earth was Shakespeare doing when he wrote those characters and lines that baffle our interpretation? Those pirates in “Hamlet”—just what were they supposed to prove? Those not very parental parents that pop up here and there? And what about the rather unsatisfactory pairings—starting with Hamlet and Ophelia, Gertrude and Claudius, to name but two in one play? Or those somewhat unhappy endings, even in comedy?  This season we’ll be looking at three plays—”Hamlet,” “The Two Gentlemen of Verona,” and “Cymbeline”—and asking ourselves the question: “What was Shakespeare thinking?”

Dr. Susan Jones, associate professor of English, specializes in Renaissance and medieval literature and has presented papers on Shakespeare and other topics at numerous national and international conferences including the International medieval Congress at Leeds.

Dr. Beate Rodewald, associate professor of English, specializes in the connections between literature and the other arts, with a particular interest in literary theory and utopian literature.
