A Passion for Opera – Session II with Ariane Csonka Comstock

Please note: This class is part of a ten-class series, beginning January 30, 2017 and ending April 10. Tickets may not be purchased to individual classes.

In this popular series, Ariane Csonka Comstock enriches the passionate experience of opera – a combination of all the arts – with extensive background material in literature, language, history and politics. She will compare performances with DVDs, internet videos and recordings of charismatic stars past and present, and lead lively discussions of current productions at the Metropolitan Opera Live in HD as well as the Palm Beach Opera. This season offers a wide variety; romantics will open their hearts to the passions of “Tristan & Isolde”, “Romeo et Juliette” and “La Traviata”; neophytes will thrill to “Carmen” and “Madama Butterfly”; opera buffs will be titillated by the exploratory “L’Amour de Loin” and “Rusalka” (with the luscious Kristine Opolais); and on a lighter note, Palm Beach Opera will explore Gilbert & Sullivan with “The Pirates of Penzeance”. Opera buffs and beginners alike are welcome to join and enjoy the nuances and beauty of opera. Visual aids by Gordon Stubbs.

Ariane Csonka Comstock, daughter of Scandinavian artist Jean Theslöf and Metropolitan mezzo-soprano Grace Divine, has had a multifaceted career. Her professional credits include work as a film actress, operatic soprano, radio and television hostess, music critic and humor journalist. Fluent in five languages, she has translated 15 operas published by Belwin Mills, plus the Shchedrin/Nabokov opera “Lolita.” She is the author of the award-winning book, “The Young Person’s Guide to the Opera.”
