The Story of Russia from Ivan the Terrible to Tolstoy II

    Session II

Please note: This class is part of a ten-class series, tickets may not be purchased to individual classes.

The class will follow Russia’s emergence from its early colonization by Scandinavians, its subjugation by the Tatars, its battles with the Teutonic Knights, its gradual realization of nationhood, to its birth as a great power under its Tsars. Included will be the lives of the mighty but barbaric leaders who created Muscovy, its conversion to Christianity under St. Nicolas, its place in history and its unique architecture and art. The course will trace the uneasy history of Russia positioned on the boundary of Western Europe with its powerful Tsarinas, its mad Tsars and its reformists. Together we will trace Russia’s story through its victory over Napoleon in 1812 to its emergence into the modern world with its unique approach to art, music and literature. Russian writers, Tolstoy, Turgenev, Chekhov and Dostoevsky will be among those discussed, together with Russia’s adoption of Western music and ballet. A selection of classic films will also be shown.

Juliette de Marcellus is a pianist, prize-winning music critic and lecturer. She studied at the Guildhall School of Music in London and with professor Leonie Gombrich at Oxford. She has written a narrative version of Prokofiev’s “Lieutenant Kije Suite” for the Detroit Symphony Orchestra.
