Powerful Patrons with Joan Lipton, Ph.D.

An in-depth look at the new patrons who are shaping the art world. Workshop includes lunch.

The role and influence of artists patronage through history is a fascinating subject and one which may have lessons for the artists and patrons in this century. Gone are the days of Paul Durand-Ruel (who “made” the impressionists). Today’s list of powerful patrons may surprise you, and they have more impact than ever before on what is considered “great art.” Dr. Joan Lipton will explore the collections and personalities who have shifted the taste in art including Leonard and Ronald Lauder, Dorothy and Herbert Vogel, Ely and Edythe Broad, Alice Walton, and even entertainment celebrities. Dr. Lipton will also survey the collections of new and emerging patrons including Tom Kaplan, Marlene and Spencer Hays, Sergei Shchukin, Steven and Ann Ames and Marquise Alicia Koplowitz.
