Set in Montgomery, Alabama during the 1955 Montgomery Bus Boycott, The Long Walk Home stars Whoopi Goldberg as Odessa Cotter, an African-American woman who works as a maid/nanny for Miriam Thompson (Sissy Spacek). When Odessa refuses to ride the bus to work, Miriam offers to drive her—causing a rift with her husband (Dwight Schultz) and others in the white community.
