African-American Film Festival: Sparkle (1976)

Drawing inspiration from the Supremes, Sparkle is set in 1950s Harlem, New York and is the story of three musically gifted sisters. Sparkle (Irene Cara), Sister (Lonette McKee) and Dolores (Dwan Smith) become a sensation at a local nightclub while their mother, Effie (Mary Alice) supports them by working as a maid. Sparkle’s boyfriend, Stix (Philip Michael Thomas) encourages the girls to pursue their dreams, but trouble ensues when Sister is appointed the group’s leader and begins dating Satin (Tony King), an abusive drug-addict. (1 hour, 38 minutes)
