The Russians Are Coming!

Saturday, October 27, 2018 @ 7:30pm
Duncan Theatre
Presented by Symphonic Band of the Palm Beaches

Remember the 1966 Cold War comedy: “The Russians Are Coming! The Russians Are Coming!” starring Carl Reiner, Eva Marie Saint, Alan Arkin, Brian Keith and Jonathan Winters? Then you are as old as I am or older. The modern-day version is the concert by the Symphonic Band of the Palm Beaches, which stars Tchaikovsky, Shostakovich, Prokofiev, among other Russian composers.

The first of the “Russian” concerts will be held at the Eissey Campus Theatre in Palm Beach Gardens on Saturday, October 20, 2018. A repeat performance at the Duncan Theatre in Lake Worth is on Saturday, October 27. Both performances begin at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $21, and may be purchased by phone at 561-832-3115, or online at www.SymphonicBand.org.

The band begins the season with the brilliant “Festive Overture” by Dimitri Shostakovich, followed by a beautiful piccolo solo in J. Levy’s “Grand Russian Fantasia.” Another Russian heavyweight composer, Sergei Prokofiev, provides “March Op. 99” for the band to perform. Next up is the trombone section, which carries the melody in the jazzy, “Midnight in Moscow.” The first half of the performance closes with a musical slideshow of sorts. The band will play Mussorgsky’s “Pictures at An Exhibition,” Nos. 8 and 9: “Hut of the Baba-Yaga” and “The Great Gate of Kiev.”

The second half of the evening’s program opens with “Abschied der Slawin,” which translates as “Farewell of the Slavic Girl.” Then things get lively with “Russian Rag” by George Cobb, which is based on Rachmaninoff’s dramatic “Prelude in C Sharp Minor.” Next up, from the Russian ballet “The Red Poppy,” comes the popular “Russian Sailors’ Dance.” Please stay in your seats for this dance. And speaking of dancing: the band will perform “Spanish Dance,” which was made famous in the movie “Gadfly,” and is composed by Dimitri Shostakovich.

The program comes to a finale with Tchaikovsky, featuring “Marche Slave” or as the French say: “Slavonic March.” Dobroy nochi!
