Home is where the art is

Lighthouse ArtCenter makes you feel at home this summer with ‘Summer Home’ and ‘Super Summer 2.0’ (June 7 - August 7, 2021)

Lighthouse ArtCenter (LAC) celebrates homes of all sizes this summer with two concurrent exhibitions, “Summer Home” and “Super Summer 2.0.” “Summer Home” in the Spencer Gallery features the original dollhouse collection from Jupiter Island resident Lucy Bassett Andrews, whose grandfather founded Bassett Furniture. On loan from her son Douglas B. Andrews, the collection of three dollhouses is known for the miniature art adorning the walls, by world-renowned artists including Cy Twombly, Julian Schnabel, Ross Bleckner, Donald Baechler, Rebecca Warren and Philip Taaffe. The artists came together in 1993 creating over 50 custom-designed artworks in their signature styles for the dollhouses.

Every home needs a pet; thus amongst these magnificent dollhouses are large canine-inspired oil paintings and life-sized, tail-wagging, dog sculptures created by Florida artist Skip Hartzell. Visitors are warmly greeted by Hartzell’s furry friends of all shapes, sizes, textures, and colors.

In the adjacent Schorr Gallery, “Super Summer 2.0,” is a family-friendly exhibition and MakerSpace. The exhibition features nationally acclaimed puppeteers, FX animation engineers, and concept originators including Carter Goodrich, creator of characters for Hollywood blockbusters, “Despicable Me,” “Ratatouille,” “Finding Nemo,” and “Shrek.” Tiny Towns with themes inspired by “The Jetsons,” “Swiss Family Robinson,” “The Flintstones,” and more are on display for kids to interact with and build objects with easy-to-use animation software and 3D printers. Admission is free for members and $5 for nonmembers. For more information visit, lighthousearts.org.

“Spend a hot day in our cool gallery with great art and good friends. This extraordinary exhibition and exciting MakerSpace is sure to be one of the highlights of your whole summer,” says Curator, Janeen Mason.
